Sony VAIO S Series – VPCSB18GG/B/S vs VPCSB19GG/B & VPCSB16FG/B | Laptop/Notebook Review | IT Gadgets VPCSB18GG

Over one of previous weekend when Sony launched their new line of Sony VAIO laptops – Sony S Series, my wife and I headed down to catch a glimpse in a hope to replace her much aged and ailing existing Sony VAIO Z series laptop. There was then an aggressive marketing promotion which attracted huge crowd to snap up all available sets within Singapore. Initially I am quite skeptical on the new series as the other previous launches were not very interesting. Possibly, I am only focus on good design and strong on board configurations. This time round, Sony has launched the new VAIO S Series with an aim to close up the gap between the entry level laptops and the Z series. For a price range between S$1699 – S$2999, one can get a very good performance laptop comparable to the old VAIO Z Series. During this promotional period, there is a free 8GB memory upgrade and a luxury premium laptop bag.

There are 3 variants of the Sony VAIO S series – VPCSB18GG/B/S (which I bought), VPCSB19GG/B and VPCSB16FG/B. The chief differences in each of the variant in order of ascending specs built are:

VPCSB16FG/B: (S$1699)
Intel® Core™ i5-2410M Processor 2.30 GHz
Free upgrade to 6GB ram
3 MB (L3 Cache)
AMD Radeon™ HD 6470M (SPEED MODE) / Intel® HD Graphics 3000 (STAMINA MODE)
512 MB graphics DDR3 (SPEED MODE)
320 GB*4 (Serial ATA, 5400 rpm)

VPCSB18GG/B/S: (S$ 1999)
Intel® Core™ i7-2620M Processor 2.70 GHz
Free upgrade to 8GB ram
4 MB (L3 Cache)
AMD Radeon™ HD 6470M (SPEED MODE) / Intel® HD Graphics 3000 (STAMINA MODE)
512 MB graphics DDR3 (SPEED MODE)
500 GB*4 (Serial ATA, 7200 rpm)

VPCSB19GG/B: (S$2999)
Intel® Core™ i7-2620M Processor 2.70 GHz
Free Upgrade to 8GB ram
4 MB (L3 Cache)
AMD Radeon™ HD 6630M (SPEED MODE) / Intel® HD Graphics 3000 (STAMINA MODE)
1gb graphics DDR3 (SPEED MODE)
RAID 0 256gb SSD

Thus, if you look closely at the specification differences against the price, I would recommend VPCSB18GG/B/S for a cost effective budget unless you are into games & solid multimedia processing which requires top notch graphics processing power and SSD.

The VAIO Series S is amazing light – 1.72 kg (including the supplied battery) with a metal built unlike the other plastic feel series. It also comes in a few colors – Black, Silver, White, Blue, Pink, Gold, depending on the variant.
